Close to Sea & Moor

Travelling the beautiful length of Bilsdale and emerging into Helmsley market town is a real joy! Probably the most attractive local town, it's got the gold medal for attractive streets and shopfronts. Lovely cafes and restaurants can be found here as well as a Browns Department Store, great bookshop, old fashioned sweet shop, Auntie Anne’s locally famous pie shop and in particular Hunters deli counter for those little indulgent treats we can all forgive ourselves for splashing out on when holidaying.
Casting a wider net over to the seaside, there's plenty on offer here too for beach & cliff top walks to blow the cobwebs away. Runswick Bay gets our vote for a stroll with a beautiful backdrop and a celebratory ice cream. Meanwhile, the oldest Water powered Tramway in Great Britain just along the road in Saltburn, dating back to 1844 is worth a look just for some nostalgia.
Heading out on an easy drive to York, you'll find a vast array of larger shops, places to eat and entertainment. Don't forget to admire the astounding York Minster!
Castle Howard is over this way too and provides a great full day out with its own farm shop and cafe. What a beautiful stately home it is with an incredible interior. If you're here with someone younger, ‘Skelf Island’ adventure playground accessed via a wooden rope bridge will certainly be appreciated. The Boathouse cafe on its perimeter allows parents to grab a coffee and recharge too.
We count ourselves extremely lucky to have all this and more on our doorstep. These few tips about our local area are just scratching the surface of what's on offer here. We warmly invite you to come and enjoy a piece of it for yourselves and make your own memories!
